Whether or not you have a date this Valentine’s Day, Netflix is taking you on a romantic trip to Italy with the new original movie, La Dolce Villa, which began streaming today.
Directed by Mark Waters, with a screenplay written by Elizabeth Hackett and Hilary Galanoy, La Dolce Villa stars Scandal‘s Scott Foley as Eric, an American who impulsively travels to Italy when he hears that his daughter, Olivia (Maia Reficco), is buying a broken-down “one Euro villa.” When dad is unable to talk daughter out of this questionable life decision, he sticks around to help her renovate. And it’s hard to stay on the Italian coast for long without falling in love. (At least, it is in movies.)
Also starring Violante Placido and Giuseppe Futia, La Dolce Villa promises to be the perfect escape from this bleak winter to the gorgeous, sunny, Italian countryside. But is that actually Italy you’re seeing on screen? Read on to find out more about where La Dolce Villa was filmed and the La Dolce Villa filming locations.
Where was La Dolce Villa filmed?
La Dolce Villa was filmed on location in Italy. Why else do you think Scott Foley agreed to do the movie?
More specifically, La Dolce Villa filmed in Rome, Eastern Lazio, and Tuscany, according to a Netflix Tudum report on the movie. “I’d go back to Italy this afternoon to shoot another project,” Foley told Netflix.
The interior scenes inside the villa were filmed at Cinecittá Studios in Rome, aka the largest film studio in Italy, where directors from Martin Scorsese to Luca Guadagnino have filmed. Federico Fellini’s 1960 film, La Dolce Vita (which we assume the title of this movie is a reference to) was also filmed at Cinecittá Studios.
For the scenes that take place outdoors, many were filmed at a farmhouse in the Roman countryside called Torrino del Gelsi, a popular event space and wedding venue about 45 minutes outside of Rome. The farm’s website describes the location as being “surrounded by centuries-old mulberry trees, olive trees and green hills. It is the ideal place for a relaxing stay in the midst of nature, away from the hectic pace of the city, in a unique setting.”
If you can’t afford to visit right now, then you can always admire the beautiful scenery by watching La Dolce Villa, which is now streaming on Netflix.
