Softball Falls To Host Elon In Extra Innings, 2-1

ELON, N.C. (Feb. 14, 2025)–Morgan State concluded Day 1 of the Elon Phoenix Invitational with a heartbreaking 2-1 loss to host Elon on Friday afternoon at Hunt Softball Park. Earlier in the day the Lady Bears lost to Penn, 7-2 in the opener.

Morgan State dropped to 1-6 this season, while Elon improved to 2-4. The Phoenix also upped their all-time record to 5-1 against Morgan State.

Behind some stellar pitching and defense on both sides, the two teams would play seven innings of scoreless softball.

Morgan State got on the board in the top half of the extra frame when Alison Keener grounded out to the pitcher, allowing Tonya Marks to score, giving the Lady Bears the first run of the game and a 1-0 lead.

However, Elon would score two runs in the bottom half of the eighth inning to steal victory from Morgan State. The Phoenix tied the score at 1-1 when Chloe Hatzopoulos singled to right field to score Greta Hessenthaler. Gabi Schaal later doubled down the left field line to score Hatzopoulos for the 2-1 victory.

The Phoenix held a 5-1 advantage in hits. Nia Lewis recorded the Lady Bears’ lone hit of the game, while five different Elon players recorded a hit.

Victoria Fletcher (1-3) threw a game-high six strikeouts in 7.2 innings of work.

Morgan State will be back in action tomorrow when they look for payback when it takes on Penn at 10:30 a.m., before closing out the tournament against Elon at 3:30 p.m.
