Wrexham fell to defeat on Tuesday night, losing 2-0 at Reading in a major blow to Phil Parkinson’s automatic promotion hopes.
Phil Parkinson made a return to Reading on Tuesday night having been a hero with the Royals during his playing days.
Wrexham beat Rotherham United 1-0 on Saturday and headed to Berkshire in fine spirits after seven points from three games.
Those results came with three straight clean sheets, so Wrexham hit the road with real hope of another positive result.
This ended up being a horrible trip though with Wrexham falling to a 2-0 defeat against Reading.
Harvey Knibbs and Lewis Wing scored the goals, leaving Wrexham with a must-win game at Wycombe Wanderers this weekend.
Wrexham results have been too close for a while now
Wrexham are still right in the mix for promotion to the Championship but have missed a chance to leapfrog Wycombe.
Wrexham have now lost five out of 13 League One games in 2025 and just can’t seem to build real momentum.
After losing just three times in the first 23 league games of the season, Wrexham’s form in 2025 has been a concern.
Another worry is that even when Wrexham have won in recent times, the victories tend to be very tight affairs.
In the last 20 League One games, Wrexham have won 11, drawn four and lost five.
Of those 11 wins, only one has been by more than one goal – Wrexham’s 2-0 win over Northampton Town in February.
The other 10 wins have been by one of two scorelines – 1-0 or 2-1.
Wrexham haven’t scored three goals in a League One game since beating Exeter 3-0 on November 23, 2024.
At that point, Wrexham had scored three against Wycombe, Reading and Shrewsbury as well as four against Northampton.
The goals were flying in more freely and Wrexham recorded five wins by two or more goals in the first 16 games; that attacking quality has now slowed down.
The reliance on Steven Fletcher to come off the bench and make something happen is just too high and Wrexham fans are criticising Parkinson for his tactical approach.
Getting Wrexham into the promotion mix is a fine achievement in itself but this drop-off in attacking quality leaves many fans more than a little concerned.
The same 20-game period has brought four victories by two or more goals for Wycombe, including 3-0 and 4-1 wins at Stevenage and Shrewsbury Town.
It’s a similar story at Charlton Athletic, who have gone on a superb run and are now loitering behind Wrexham with intent.
The Addicks have also won four games by two or more goals in the last 20 games, racking up three goals against Exeter City and five at Northampton in the process.
These tight games don’t give much margin for error; maybe Fletcher comes off the bench to win it, but maybe Wrexham end up on the wrong end – as has been the case in 2025.
The ability to pull away from teams appears to have gone for Wrexham and having blown teams away earlier in the season, many will be wondering just where that edge has gone.
Wrexham invested in Sam Smith as a club-record signing in January whilst Jay Rodriguez arrived too.
It’s no good adding the strikers without a consistent supply line and, right now, Wrexham’s attack appears to have taken a step back from where it was earlier in the campaign.
