The IRS said individuals in need of extra time beyond the May 1 date must file for an extension. Anyone who needs more time is urged to request an extension electronically by April 15, 2025.
“Though disaster-area taxpayers also qualify to request a tax filing extension between April 15 and May 1, 2025, these requests cannot be filed electronically,” a news release from the IRS read. “They can be filed only on paper using Form 4868, Application for Automatic Extension of Time to File U.S. Individual Income Tax Return.“
The extension will give taxpayers until Oct. 15, 2025, to file their 2024 return.
The IRS said that tax payments are still due by May 1, 2025.
