Fire burns eight families out of their apartments in Bridge City

They escaped with their lives, but eight families have lost just about everything they own to a raging fire that tore through Southern Oaks Apartments, 1571 Texas Avenue.

First responders rescued families and fought the flames that broke out at about 3:30 this afternoon.

Some were close to becoming trapped in their apartments and had no idea flames were tearing through their apartment building.

Most will need a lot of help rebuilding their lives.

“I’m happy that my child is okay and that I’m okay,” tenant Crystal Rain told KFDM/Fox 4 News. “But just where we go from here, I don’t know.”

Crystal Rain was inside her apartment when the fire broke out.

“I wasn’t aware that there was a fire,” said Rain. “I mean, until the police actually were banging on my door, banging out, and I didn’t know what was going on. I heard fire trucks and stuff, and people yelling and screaming.”

The apartment complex will work with the Red Cross, Salvation Army, and other organizations to help the families.
