Drew Barrymore says ex-boyfriend tried to move his mom into their house

Drew Barrymore can forgive a lot of things when in a relationship, but she draws the line at having to live with any potential in-laws permanently. 

During Tuesday’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, the host and her pals Valerie Bertinelli and Ross Mathews reacted to a PEOPLE report about a woman who called off her wedding after discovering that her fiancé had secretly purchased a house with his mom. 

“This happened to me — whoever you are, madam, out there — I totally have been through something like you’ve been through, although I was not engaged,” Barrymore said. “But I moved in with one of my first boyfriends and I was really excited, We get the most cute little house in Los Feliz, California, I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be a hipster with my live-in boyfriend! Oh my God, I’m Mary Tyler Moore-ing it!’”

Her domestic dreams, however, were soon quashed by her partner making a sudden declaration. “We move in, he goes, ‘By the way, my mom is going to come stay with us.’ And I was like, ‘Oh… Okay! That’s so cool! Like, for how long?’” She recalled. “And he goes, ‘Like, maybe forever? Indefinitely. She’s gonna move in with us.’”

And, in the immortal words of Daryl Hall and John Oates, Barrymore simply could not go for that (no can do). 

“I literally go, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go,’” she said. “Are you out of your mind? Your mother — have I met your mother? He’s like, ‘No.’ I’m like, ‘So, I don’t know your mother?’ He’s like, ‘No, I think you’ll be fine.’ I’m like, ‘I have mother issues! I’m leaving. Here’s my laundry basket — I’m out!’”

Turning to the camera to address the woman from the article, Barrymore added, “Ma’am, I am so sorry that happened to you. It’s not okay to spring the mom is coming to move in with you.”

Barrymore is a mom herself to two daughters, Frankie and Olive, whom she shares with her ex-husband Will Kopelman. The actress spoke with a collection of audience members about the “bizarre” experience of trying to date as a single parent later in the episode. 

“I don’t really know how, exactly, to do it,” she said. “I’ll go on a date here or a date there and I feel like it’s sort of in my adult life; it’s not really a part of my real world, or my home life.” 

She added that she has “no interest” in mixing both parts of her life together, either. “My girls, they tell me all the time they’d love for me to meet somebody and then I’m like, ‘I don’t really know how to do this with you guys,’” Barrymore admitted. “And that’s okay! Because if there was something missing or I was really unfulfilled or I needed something, I would be true to that.”
