Drew Barrymore quickly ended one of her first relationships after her boyfriend invited his mother to live with them.
On this morning’s episode of The Drew Barrymore Show, Barrymore, Ross Mathews and Valerie Bertinelli discussed a Reddit post about a bride who called off her wedding after finding out that her fiancé had secretly bought a house with his mother.
“This happened to me,” Barrymore said, before adding, “I totally have been through something like you’ve been through, although I was not engaged.”
“I moved in with one of my first boyfriends and I was really excited,” she continued. “We get the most cute little house in Los Feliz, California. I’m like, ‘I’m gonna be a hipster with my live-in boyfriend. Oh, my God! I’m Mary Tyler Moore-ing it!’”
However, Barrymore’s excitement came crashing down when her then-boyfriend, who she did not name, asked his mom to live with them.
“We move in, he goes, ‘By the way, my mom is going to come stay with us,’” Barrymore recalled. “And I was like, ‘Oh.’ So I’m like, ‘OK, that’s so cool. For how long?’ And he goes, ‘Like, maybe forever. Indefinitely. She’s gonna move in with us.’”
That’s when the actress knew she had to get out of the relationship.
She explained, “I literally go, ‘I gotta go. I gotta go. Are you out of your mind? Have I met your mother?’ He’s like, ‘No.’ I’m like, ‘So I don’t know your mother.’ And he’s like, ‘No. I think you’ll be fine.’ I’m like, ‘I have mother issues, I’m leaving! Here’s my laundry basket. I’m out!’”

Barrymore added that it’s “not OK to spring the mom is coming to move in with you” on someone.
The talk show host previously opened up about her rollercoaster relationship with her mother while chatting with Brooke Shields in an April 2023 episode of The Drew Barrymore Show.
“I was so confused about sexuality because my mom went and dated my boyfriends,” she said, assuming that her mother “might have been so enamored” with her that she “actually wanted to be with the people” that she was with.
Despite their odd relationship, Barrymore credited her mother with giving her the life she lives now.
“If my mom hadn’t schlepped me to every audition and become my manager, I might not be sitting here right now, and there’s nowhere on earth I’d rather be,” she said.
