OKLAHOMA CITY – The No. 17 Oklahoma State softball team lost a 11-3 decision in five innings to No. 2 Oklahoma in front of an NCAA regular-season record crowd of 9,259 at Devon Park Wednesday.
The Cowgirls fell to 23-12 with the loss, while the Sooners improved to 35-3.
OSU opened the scoring with a pair of unearned runs in the first inning. A throwing error from OU pitcher Sam Landry brought Tia Warsop home from second. On the very next pitch, Sooner third baseman Nelly McEnroe-Marina booted a grounder off the bat of Amanda Hasler that scored Rosie Davis from second. The Cowgirls threatened to add more in the first , but Landry got out of the jam by stranding two runners.
Davis extended the OSU advantage to 3-0 in the third inning by driving a fastball over the fence in right-center field for her sixth home run of the season. OU responded in the home half of the third when Kasidi Pickering hit a two-run homer to right.
The Cowgirls loaded the bases with nobody out in the fourth, but with the infield pulled in, Sooner second baseman Ailana Agbayani made a diving catch off a hard line drive from Tallen Edwards. Two more outs ensued and OSU ended up stranding all three runners without scoring a run.
Having seized a bit of momentum in the top half of the inning, the Sooners erupted with five runs in the bottom of the fourth to take a 7-3 lead. OU added five runs in the fifth to cap the scoring.
Ruby Meylan (15-5) took the loss for the Cowgirls while Landry improved to 12-2 with the win. OU scored seven runs, five of which were earned, in Meylan’s 3.2 innings of work. Katie Kutz came on to record the final out of the fourth inning before allowing four runs in the fifth to end the game.
Wednesday’s game counted toward the people of Oklahoma Oil and Natural Gas Bedlam Series. The win trimmed OSU’s advantage to 5-3 in head-to-head competition against the Sooners in all sports this year. Oklahoma State has won the all-sports Bedlam Series in 10 of the last 12 years.
The Cowgirls return to action when they host a three-game weekend series with Iowa State beginning at noon Friday in Stillwater. The game will be streamed live on ESPN+ and can be heard on the Varsity Network app.
