Austin police responds to degraded explosives incident

APD said bomb technicians were working to safely move explosives found in the 11900 block of Dove Haven Drive.

AUSTIN, Texas — The Austin Police Department (APD) Bomb Squad has concluded its response to an incident involving degraded explosives found in a northeast Austin neighborhood on Monday afternoon.

Around 2:15 p.m., APD said officers responded the 11900 block of Dove Haven Drive, near the intersection of East Braker Lane and Interstate 35.

Police said a landlord called police after locating a large quantity of legal explosives that were decades old and degraded, making them unsafe to move. The approximately 40 pounds of explosives would have been used in mining or construction, APD said.

Bomb technicians worked in a “slow and methodical” manner to disable the explosives and make them safe to move, using full-body bomb suits and robots. The process took several hours, and police finished handling the explosives around 10 p.m.

Residents were also told to expect possible smoke and burning as the bomb squad responded to the situation, which APD called “unstable.” APD said in an update on Tuesday that there was no property damage or injuries reported.

People were instructed to avoid the area and plan for possible road closures nearby.

APD said it does not anticipate any criminal charges in this case.
