Craft retailer Joann is no longer accepting use of their own gift cards.
The chain is undergoing a liquidation process after filing for bankruptcy in January. Initial plans were to close over 500 of the more than 800 stores nationwide, but the remaining stores were announced to also close after GA Group won the bid to acquire the majority of Joann’s assets.
As the going-out-of-business sales continue, however, Joann has announced that they will no longer be accepting gift cards sold by the company.
The policy to no longer accept the gift cards into effect on Feb. 28, which follows soon after the Feb. 25 announcement that every store would be closing.
Some customers have taken to social media, sharing their frustrations about holding gift cards that can no longer be redeemed.
“I just want you to know how incredibly upsetting it is that you cut off our ability to use gift cards,” read one comment made on the Joann Instagram page. “Regardless of the fact that you are closing, your business took money and now refuses to give the product in exchange for it. Wrong.”
While state laws vary about the use of gift cards, particularly about their expiration, their use during liquidation is determined by a bankruptcy court.
