Georgetown vs. Creighton NCAAB Preview
Injuries will be key to this handicap, as both teams’ star centers — Georgetown’s Thomas Sorber and Creighton’s Ryan Kalkbrenner — are questionable to play due to lower-body injuries.
There’s no shot I can bet on this game without knowing the status of those two.
That said, if both were healthy, I’d probably lean toward the Hoyas.
Jayden Epps and Micah Peavy ripped apart Creighton’s KalkDrop in the first meeting, with the duo combining for 41 points in an 81-57 win.
Yes, the Hoyas were a tad lucky in that game, shooting a ridiculous 10-for-16 (63%) from 3. Still, they shot 23-for-44 (52%) from inside the arc, and I think they can replicate that drop-coverage production in the rematch.
On the other end of the court, Creighton shot a respectable 12-for-33 (36%) from deep but was smothered on the interior by Sorber and Georgetown’s super solid interior defense.
The Bluejays shot 8-for-17 (47%) in the paint en route to just 16 paint points, about half their season average. Kalkbrenner scored 10 but hit only two 2-point shots on three attempts.
Even if Georgetown saw serious 3-point shooting regression, the Hoyas could still compete — or dominate — the paint on both ends of the court, and that should be enough to cover a 10-point spread.
That said, Georgetown has trended downward since that first head-to-head meeting while posting poor offensive performances against DePaul and Providence’s drop-coverage defenses.
Meanwhile, Creighton started playing its best basketball directly after the loss, and Sunday is a good spot for a big bounce-back win against a step-down in competition after tough losses to UConn and St. John’s.
All in all, there’s far too much uncertainty surrounding this matchup.
